Smog Check in Apple Valley & Victorville, CA
Who Needs One?
California and the smog check have a long relationship. The first complete smog check program began in March 1984. Smog, a combination of smoke and fog, is a type of air pollution that can adversely affect human health, the environment, and the economy. The California Smog Check program plays a crucial role in addressing these issues. It is now required of most vehicles in the state. However, there are some exemptions. Vehicles made before 1975, electric vehicles, diesel-powered vehicles made 1997 or earlier, and natural gas-powered vehicles.
Furthermore, you can get a smog check exemption if your vehicle is under eight years old. For $25, you can purchase a yearly smog abatement fee to avoid the check. We cover all your smog check needs and questions at Big Apple Automotive in Apple Valley and Victorville, CA.
What Happens During A Smog Check
The smog check involves two primary types of tests: the tailpipe emissions test and the On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) test. The tailpipe emissions test measures the pollutants emitted by the vehicle’s exhaust, including nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons. The vehicle is placed on a dynamometer, and sensors analyze the exhaust gasses during various driving conditions. If these compounds are too high, your vehicle will fail. For newer vehicles equipped with OBD systems, this test checks if the vehicle’s emission control components and systems are functioning properly. The OBD system monitors the vehicle’s performance and emissions and generates error codes if issues are detected. If any issues are detected, they can be addressed in our shop. An inspection could also include checking the engine and exhaust systems and visual inspections of the emissions systems.
